Treatment & Management of Low Back Pain

“Worldwide, low back pain causes more disability than any other condition”.¹

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence defines low back pain as soreness or stiffness in the back, between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your legs.¹

Other symptoms that may accompany low back pain include sciatica. Sciatica is a word that is used to describe leg pain that is secondary to a nerve (nerve root or spinal nerve) being effected.¹

Episodes of back pain usually have improvements in pain and disability within a few weeks to a few months with primary care management.  The need for investigations or referral to specialist services will be considered if the result is likely to change management.¹

Managing modifiable risk factors for low back pain can reduce the risk of developing a chronic condition. These risk factors include:

Insufficient physical activity

Smoking

Overweight/obesity

Occupational hazards

Joint trauma and injuries.²

Non-pharmacological interventions include self-management (education and advice), exercise, and manual therapy.¹

People’s specific needs, preferences and capabilities should be taken into account with the application of these therapies.¹
