Lateral Epicondylitis – (Tennis Elbow)
Lateral epicondylitis is the most common condition affecting the elbow1. It typically results from overuse injuries, involving the forearm extensor tendons1.
Have you ever experienced lingering pain on the outside of your elbow? It may have appeared gradually and can be achy or sharp in nature. You can particularly feel it when gripping objects, such as picking up a cup of coffee or holding a milk carton.
Does this sound familiar? You may have lateral epicondylitis, or more commonly known as ‘Tennis Elbow’.
What is Lateral Epicondylitis – (Tennis Elbow)
Symptoms generally include tenderness at the lateral elbow and pain that refers into the forearm. The area can be aggravated by certain movements, such as gripping, lifting and extension of the wrist.
The condition frequently occurs with activities that involve repetitive motions and high loading of the wrist2. This can be related to occupations such as desk workers, carpenters and electricians or daily activities including gardening and throwing sports.
How can Osteopaths help?
Current research shows that first line treatment of lateral epicondylitis can be managed conservatively 1.
Osteopaths can support the management and severity of this condition by employing manual therapy techniques, providing education and exercise prescription.
The treatment can comprise of mobilisation, stretching and strengthening2. It is also recommended that exercise prescription be used in conjunction with manual therapy, to support the improvement of pain, function and grip strength 1
