Surviving the trip….The best exercises for travelling!

Going on holidays? Exercises for travelling.

Holidays are almost upon us! Are you making the most of the time off by getting away? Here are my top tips and top exercises for travelling for keeping mobile and functioning well!

Christmas and New Year can be such a wonderful time, especially if you’re lucky enough to escape for a few days. However, for some patients, the idea of sitting in a car or a plane for long periods of time or sleeping in different beds can be a bit daunting. If you’re already seeing an Osteopath, they may provide you with some exercises for travelling, stretches or advice specifically for your complaint, otherwise you might find these tips beneficial.

  1. If you’re going on a road trip take a little extra time out to make the most of the beautiful lookouts or the amazing towns along the way. Getting out of your car regularly gives you a chance to stretch your legs, move around, get the blood flowing and keeps you from stiffening up. You may find it also helps to keep you alert whilst driving!

2. Again, if you’re travelling by car, make some room to take your pillow or your travel pillow (it could even fit in your luggage if going by plane 😉) with you. Unfortunately, you can’t control the beds you will be sleeping on, but in my experience taking your pillow can make a huge difference. That way you know your head and neck will be nicely supported.

3. While you’re packing your pillow, why not take your favourite heat pack or hot water bottle just in case? It’s a handy thing to have if you find you get the odd ‘niggly’ pain here or there, or are a little apprehensive of how you might feel whilst you’re away and you usually respond well to the use of heat. If you are unsure if the place you will be staying at has a microwave, then the hot water bottle can be a safer bet, as most places have a kettle or access to hot water.

4. Move it or lose it – especially when on a long distance journey! Try and get up and move around as often as you can, this is particularly useful and necessary on those long haul flights. We generally advise most people to move around every 30-60 minutes if you’re not sleeping.

5. Dress comfortably – If you are on a long distance flight try and wear clothes that aren’t restricting your movement or your blood flow.

Some quick and easy exercises for travelling you might like to incorporate into your trip include:

  • When you have stopped driving for a break, or when you get up to go to the bathroom on the plane, do a couple of walking lunges with alternating legs. Then when in the cubicle, do a few squats and a few calf raises. These are great exercises for travelling to get things moving when you have a bit more space!
  • Otherwise, if you’re stuck sitting for a while you might want to try:
    • sitting up nice and tall and bringing your ear down to your shoulder to stretch your neck
    • roll your shoulders back a few times
    • introducing some rotation to your upper body by twisting your upper body and sliding your hands down your thighs
    • bringing your arms overhead and leaning from one side to the other to stretch your side body
    • alternating bringing one of your knees up and outwards a few times and doing some foot pumps

Keep an eye out for some quick videos on our social media to further demonstrate these stretches and exercises for travelling.

Happy holidays everyone! We hope these tips keep you moving, growing and thriving!

What a pain in the neck!

Neck pain | How can we help?

Do you suffer from neck pain?

Pain in the neck? … I think most of us have had those days where we have woken up with a sore neck after a poor night’s sleep, turned to look over our shoulders too quickly and ‘cricked’ our neck or had a lot of stress or tension and felt like the weight of the world is on our shoulders.

Unfortunately on top of that, for a lot of people our modern-day society typically requires us to be spend more time sitting and looking at our computer and mobile screens which over time may start to affect our neck and shoulders.

It is thought that ‘most people can expect to experience some degree of neck pain in their lifetime’ and it appears to be more prevalent in middle age (1).

Neck pain is also the fourth leading cause of disability, with an annual prevalence rate which exceeds 30% (2). The good news is most episodes of neck pain will resolve with or without treatment!

However, nearly 50% of people who have experienced neck pain will continue to experience some degree of pain or re-occurrence in the future (2).

This is where our Osteopaths at Valued Health Osteopathy may be able to help!

As Osteopaths we aim to identify and treat the root cause of your complaint to help you to recover. Furthermore we will implement a self management plan (mobility drills, strengthening exercises, etc) to help avoid re-aggravation where possible.

Osteopathy and Neck pain

Your Osteopath will begin your consultation with a thorough case history. They may ask you what seems like a lot of questions, which may not feel completely relevant to what you’re coming in with.

However, these questions along with further testing will help us form a working diagnosis and give us a clearer indication as to what structures are being impacted, so we can treat you more effectively.

Once your Osteopath has finished taking your case history, if clinically indicated, they may perform a clinical examination. This typically entails looking at your neck and other surrounding regions and structures. (E.g. your upper back, shoulders, mid/low back).

Further examination such as assessing posture, areas of muscle tightness or weaknesses, range of motion (how well you move), your muscle strength and your reflexes. Other special testing such as orthopaedic tests may also be performed. This, coupled with your history will help give us a better understanding of what’s causing your complaint.

There can be many causes of neck pain including, but not limited to (3):

  • Muscles
  • Joints
  • Ligaments/tendons
  • Nerves
  • Underlying pathological conditions (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia)

Once your Osteopath has performed your case history, examination and has a working diagnosis and are confident that you may benefit from Osteopathic treatment, treatment will take place (only with your consent).

This may include techniques such as:

  • Soft tissue/massage to the tight muscles
  • Articulation (movement/stretching) of the restricted joints
  • Muscle energy (stretching) techniques to the affected muscles and or joints
  • High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) manipulation of the restricted joints
  • Dry needling
  • Mobility & Stretching drills
  • Exercise rehabilitation prescription
  • Lifestyle/ergonomic advice

Please note with treatment, your comfort is very important to us and you will be asked if you consent to any form of treatment before it is provided. You always have the opportunity to decline a certain technique if you do not like it.

At Valued Health Osteopathy our aim is to get you back to moving, growing and thriving so you can get the most out of life!

If you suffer from neck pain and think Osteopathy might be beneficial for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the clinic on (03) 9570 9061 to speak to one of our receptionists or Osteopaths. We look forward to hearing from you!

Trochanteric Bursitis

 Hip or Buttock Pain?

Trochanteric Bursitis

Valued Health Osteopathy

3/658 Centre Rd, Bentleigh East, 3165

What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

Diagnosed with Trochanteric Bursitis? – Make an appointment today!

Have you started to take advantage of the better weather by getting outside and moving? Most of the time getting out and moving is great for our bodies, however, sometimes (e.g. after a winter slump) the movement can be a bit of a shock for us and cause extra stress or strain to different parts of our bodies. It’s okay though, we are here to help you move, grow and thrive through life!

One condition that might occur is something called Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome (GTPS, otherwise known as Trochanteric Bursitis). The pain is primarily caused by tendinopathy of the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus or the surrounding bursae (3). It’s estimated to affect between 10-25% of the general population and is most common in our 40’s to 60’s (5). GTPS may be caused by trauma, repetitive high-intensitiy use of the hip and buttock muscles (recent return to exercise anyone?) and may be predisposed by dysfunction of the surrounding joints or muscles (that’s where we can help!)

GTPS is characterised by persistent pain in the lateral hip or buttock (and may radiate down the outside of your leg) which is exacerbated by lying on the affected side, prolonged standing, driving, climbing stairs, running or other high impact activities (5).

What is tendinopathy? It is a clinical syndrome most commonly resulting from repetitive motion or overuse of a tendon resulting in pathology of that tendon causing pain, swelling and impairment of function (4). It may be inflammatory in the early stages and progress to a degenerative process if it becomes chronic.
What is a bursae? Bursae are a pretty great inventions by the body. They are small sacs lined by synovium that produce synovial fluid to help lubricate and cushion areas of friction between tissues e.g. bone and muscle, tendons, ligaments and skin (1). There are many bursa throughout our bodies working hard and helping us out daily, but occasionally they get inflamed and we suffer from a condition called bursitis. When the bursa becomes inflamed, it swells and can’t do its job as well and causes pain (2). This can happen in many places, but is common in the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle.
What can we do about GTPS? Your Osteopath will take a thorough history and complete an extensive examination to determine exactly what the cause of your pain and dysfunction is. Once they have determined the cause, they may:
  • Mobilise the restricted joints that might be contributing to the dysfunction (e.g. your lower back, hip, knee, ankle/foot)
  • Address the tight/weak muscles that may be causing pain, dysfunction and compression
  • Provide you with some strengthening exercises if they have identified any weaknesses and provide you with certain mobility exercises
  • Advise you how to modify the exercise you are already doing, to help prevent the injury from re-occurring
  • If you aren’t responding to Osteopathic Treatment as expected, your Osteopath may advise you to follow up with your GP for further imaging of the area, or further medical intervention if clinically indicated or for a referral to a specialist.

If you have any questions or you would like to make an appointment and see if Osteopathy may help you, do not hesitate to contact one of our team at Valued Health Osteopathy on (03) 9570 9061. We look forward to hearing from you!

Why you should take the Stairs!

Daily Exercise & Heart Health

Valued Health Osteopathy

3/658 Centre Rd, Bentleigh East, 3165

Need help in achieving your exercise goals?

Make an appointment today – Book online!

We have all heard the that we should find the time for incidental exercise throughout our day, but how do we do this? And why is it so important?

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare states that Cardiovascular Disease is the number one cause of death in Australia (1). The World Health Organisation does give us some good news however, as they expect that 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable.

  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Regular physical activity and
  • not using tobacco products are the keys to prevention.
  • As well as managing risk factors for heart disease and stroke such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar or diabetes (2).

This recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald (3) speaks to Dr Belinda Paramenter, an exercise physiologist at UNSW. She states that the minimum amount of physical exercise we can do to improve heart health is 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise a week. If we break that down even further, that equates to about 11 minutes a day, which is very achievable for most of us.
She suggests “finding little ways of bringing high intensity or higher intensity exercise into your day and you don’t have to set aside half an hour or an hour … you don’t even have to do the 11 minutes at once”. That’s where taking the stairs instead of the lift or going for a brisk walk can come into play.
Heart health, Exercise, Exercise and Osteopathy, Osteopath Bentleigh, Osteopath Bentleigh East, Osteopath Bayside, Osteopath Moorabbin, Osteopath near me, Osteopath and rehab, Osteo Bentleigh, Osteo Bentleigh East, Osteo Moorabbin, Osteo and back pain, Osteo and neck pain, Osteo and health, Osteo and headaches
And for those who don’t feel like high intensity exercise is achievable, we have you covered as well. Dr Paramenter suggests that 22 minutes a day of moderate intensity exercise “which means it’s somewhat hard to do and you’re a little bit out of breath but you can maintain a conversation” is also as beneficial.
Dr Paramenter (exercise physiologist) states some of the benefits of exercise for our heart include:
  • Increasing the strength of our heart and its capacity to pump more blood and provide oxygenation and nutrients to the rest of our body.
  • Improvements in muscle metabolism and insulin sensitivity
  • Improvements in blood glucose control and
  • we get a reduction in cholesterol.

We hope that this serves as a little reminder for us all to get moving every day. As the weather improves at this time of year, it’s easier for us to get motivated and work towards our aim of living more healthy and active lives.

If there is anything in your way of achieving these goals that you think our Osteopaths may be able to help you with, please contact the clinic speak to one of our Osteopaths at Valued Health Osteopathy in Bentleigh East about your treatment and rehabilitation options. Call or book online today.

What happens in the Treatment Room?

What to expect at your first Osteopathic appointment!

Make an appointment today – Book online!

Have you seen an Osteopath before?

Have you been thinking about booking yourself in for an Osteopathic treatment, but you’re a bit unsure about what actually happens in the room? This blog is here to give you an idea of what to expect at your first Osteopathic Consultation.

Do I need a referral to see an Osteopath?

Whilst patients are often referred to Osteopaths for treatment by a wide range of healthcare providers, Osteopaths are primary care practitioners and you can make an appointment to see them without a referral.

What do I bring to a treatment?

You may bring along any relevant scans or medical reports that you have to your appointment.

What do I wear?

We can work around most items of clothing, but for your comfort, try to wear some loose/stretchy clothing so that its easy for you to move around on the treatment table. You may also be asked to undress to your underwear for treatment or examination, so wear what makes you comfortable in that situation. Alternatively you can bring a change of clothes to change into or your Osteopath will provide you with a gown. Your comfort is of the upmost importance to us, so if you would like to bring a friend or family member along with you to your treatment, feel free. Also, children must have an adult accompany them to a treatment.

When you arrive:

  1. Try to arrive a few minutes early to your initial consultation, as there are a few forms you will need to fill out before treatment starts
  2. When your Osteopath takes you through to the treatment room, they will ask you some questions about your medical history in general, and more specifically about why you’re coming in for treatment. As Osteopaths view the body as a whole, they will often ask questions that may not seem directly related to the symptoms you’re presenting with on that day. However it is important for them to gain an understanding of how your body is functioning overall so that they can properly address your complaint.

Once your Osteopath has taken a thorough history, they will then conduct a full Osteopathic Examination to further ascertain what the cause of your symptoms are. They may look at:

  1. Your posture (what position you’re body is in whilst you are sitting/standing/lying down)
  2. Your range of motion (how well you move or don’t move). They can do this by asking you to do particular movements, but they may also assess this passively where the Osteopath moves your body around for you
  3. What muscles are tight and/or weak
  4. Orthopaedic and/or neurological tests and diagnostic tests.
  5. As mentioned above, because Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment, your Osteopath may examine other parts of your body as well as the area of the body that is troubling you.

After your Osteopath has taken your history and performed a thorough examination, if clinically indicated, your Osteopath will provide a treatment to address the cause of your symptoms. This may involve techniques such as: Soft tissue massage, Counter-strain, Myofascial release, Muscle energy techniques (stretching), Articulation, High velocity low amplitude manipulation, Balanced ligamentous tension and Dry needling

Your Osteopath may also advise you on:

What you can expect to feel like after a treatment,

Some relevant stretches, mobility drills and strengthening exercises for your condition and

Ergonomic advice to help you better manage your complaint between appointments.

If you have any further questions, feel free to call our clinic on (03) 9570 9061 and speak to one of our lovely receptionists or Osteopaths.
